Vetoryl

Vetoryl is a prescription-only medicine used to treat Cushing's disease in dogs. Cushing's disease is characterised by excessive cortisol production, a hormone that regulates metabolism, inflammation, and immune response.

Cushing's disease in dogs, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, is a condition in which the body produces too much cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. There are two primary types of Cushing's disease in dogs:

1. 1. Pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease: This form is the most common, accounting for around 80-85% of cases. Caused by a non-cancerous tumour in the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain, the tumour stimulates the adrenal glands' overproduction of cortisol near the kidneys.
2. 2. Adrenal-dependent Cushing's disease: In this less common form, a tumour develops within one or both adrenal glands, producing excessive cortisol. The tumour can be benign (non-cancerous) or, in rare cases, malignant (cancerous).

Cushing's disease can also occur in response to long-term administration of corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, used to treat other conditions. This type is known as iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome.

Vetoryl works by blocking the production of cortisol in the adrenal glands, helping to helps alleviate the symptoms associated with Cushing's disease, such as increased thirst and urination, weight gain, and hair loss.

Vetoryl is safe for use in dogs when prescribed specifically by a vet and used as directed. However, it may cause some side effects, including: 

• - Vomiting
• - Diarrhoea
• - Lethargy

However, these side effects are uncommon and generally reversible. If your pet experiences any side effects from Vetoryl, it's essential to contact your veterinarian immediately. Some side effects may be serious, and prompt veterinary attention is necessary.

Vetoryl is usually administered orally once daily, with or without food. The dosage is determined based on the dog's weight. Vetoryl tablets are available as:

The full effects of Vetoryl may take several weeks to become noticeable. However, most dogs will show some improvement within a few days of starting treatment.
